Lowa hiking boots

Women and men know that finding the perfect pair of hiking boots can make or break their outdoor experience. I was recently shopping for a new pair of hiking boots when I came across Lowa hiking boots.

It was one of the many brands I was comparing that sell gender-specific hiking boots. That is a feature that not every manufacturer focuses on. However, it is one which is very important for sizing and fit purposes. So I began to delve into the top brands. Comparing fit, comfort, and design features in search of the perfect boot.

Although I've yet to find the perfect boot, I did learn some things in my search. Every boot has a different sizing guide in place. Therefore, the most critical thing for hikers to do is to try boots on before purchasing them. Even if buying boots online, it's a good idea to visit a local shop and try on several pairs.

Doing this allows you to at least find the best form and fit. From there, it's honestly a matter of personal preference of color, insole and outsole, and other design characteristics. Many manufacturers also introduce new technologies and liners for greater comfort levels. Some offer different waterproofing and insulation for greater warmth.

Depending on where you hike, these might be some attributes to look for in new boots. The options are endless when it comes to comparing hiking boots. But one area you can't compromise on is the fit and comfort. Hiking season is approaching fast. Do you have the right boots yet?

About Lowa Hiking Boots

When choosing a new pair of hiking boots, Lowa is one of the many brands to consider. It's important to understand the design and characteristics of their products to find the best pair. Before investing in Lowa hiking boots, men and women should compare them against leading manufacturers. Here are some distinguishing characteristics which set Lowa apart from competitors in the field.

Technologies

Lowa hiking boots implement several great technologies that differentiate the brand from competitors. In fact, there are gender-specific features to help consumers find the perfect boot. Apart from that, there are different technologies for mountaineering, climbing, and trekking. Additionally, there are waterproofing and cushioning/insole designs that set them apart from competitors when it comes to comfort level as well.

For example, the mountaineering boots have a close to ground/rock technology to keep feet as close to the surface as possible. They also have an i-Core shock absorbing insole for higher levels of comfort.

Lowa Sole technology is another distinguishing characteristic of this brand. The Vibram® sole is available in mountaineering, close grip, and other designs. There's a sole for every hiking style and every hiking boot.

Women and men-specific boots feature an anatomical design guaranteeing the perfect fit for every wearer. Polyurethane insoles increase comfort and wearability. The I-Lock technology is a simple lacing system to help improve comfort levels for hikers. Then there are cold weather boots and Gore-Tex waterproof boots to handle all hiking conditions.

With several great technologies, every hiker can find a pair of Lowa hiking boots for their feet.

Lowa Hiking Boots Sizing

Every manufacturer relies on different sizing guidelines. Lowa hiking boots suggest consumers choose the same size hiking boot as their standard shoe size.

With this suggestion in mind, it's still essential for hikers to try on several pairs before selecting one. Doing this is the best way to find the right fit and comfort levels. That's especially true because Lowa has many series/styles of boots. And they have several built-in technologies in different boots which can cause differences in sizing.

The Best and Worst Features of Lowa Hiking Boots

There are obviously some benefits and drawbacks hikers must consider when comparing Lowa hiking boots. Some of the benefits of their boot line include:

  • Comfortable padding and collars on their boots
  • Gender-specific boots to promote the best fit/feel for hikers
  • Various technologies spread throughout their extensive selection of boots
  • Support and stability for hikers on all terrains
  • Boots are relatively lightweight considering the material finishes

There are some negatives that consumers must account for also. These include:

  • Issues with sizing for some of their boots
  • Some boots are stiff, causing discomfort for some hikers
  • They are expensive in a competitive marketplace
  • Not every boot has the specific features hikers are looking for

The boots are 100 percent leather. Additionally, they feature mesh panels throughout to help increase breathability and comfort. A synthetic sole allows wearers to dig into challenging terrain. It adds stability below the wearer's feet to give them greater control over difficult trails.

The boots have a molded nylon arch. A Vibram TC5 outsole also helps increase grip on uneven terrain. The closed-cell foam tongue increases wearability and comfort for long periods of use. And the boots are only about two pounds in weight, so it's relatively easy to move around while wearing them. Furthermore, reviewers indicate they're excellent for long hikes and wet hiking conditions.

Conversely, one reviewer notes these boots don't last long. The sole begins to break apart from the boot. This design defect detracts from the otherwise solid construction and quality of the boots.

Sure, Damascus is great, but not only are there choices within the Damascus pocket knife company, but there are also other knife and blade companies out there, too. And it's a tough job weeding through them all.

That's why we're here. We have taken the guesswork out of choosing a pocket knife for your next adventure and wrapped it up in a neat little package for you.

What Is the Damascus Pocket Knife?

Damascus makes knife blades, and many knife companies use those blades. However, Damascus also produces some high-quality knives of their own. When you're about to head on your next camping trip, you want to make sure you have everything you need.

And if you don't already have one, a pocket knife should be at the top of your list. Like any good pocket knife, the blades from Damascus fold up which make them easier and safer to store and take with you.

There are many different kinds of Damascus pocket knives, so you'll probably find one that fits your needs and budget.

camp-longer-icon

Line of Knives

camp-longer-icon

The Damascus pocket knife is actually a line of pocket knives rather than a single product. As mentioned before, Damascus manufactures their own blades, and they offer a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee.

For this Damascus pocket knife review, we will be focusing on a few of their most popular folding pocket knives. If you aren't interested in any of the knives we mention, you can still check out their website and hopefully find a knife that better suits your taste.

The DKC-785 Rainbow Laguiole pocket knife has a stunning handle and, naturally, a Damascus steel blade. This knife is 8.5 inches long and has a 3.5-inch blade. The knife weighs 3.7 ounces.

The DKC-785 Rainbow Laguiole has a colored ebony wood handle that is handmade. With over 300 layers of steel, this blade can cut through a variety of materials. The knife comes with a sheath and is perfect for your next camping trip.

You can buy this specific pocket knife for $50 to $60. Amazon customers give it an average rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars.

This next pocket knife is the DKC-43 Black Thumb model. The knife is 3.25 inches when folded and 6 inches when the blade is out. At 7.5 ounces, it's heftier than the DKC-785, but you may want that extra weight.

The DKC-43 Black Thumb has a black buffalo handle which looks sleek, and it has a high-quality blade that you can expect from Damascus. This model uses a blade with over 250 layers of steel. Each of these knives is handmade, and they come with a sheath.

The small but tough pocket knife runs for about $80 to $100. The average customer rating is a solid 4.7 out of 5 stars on Amazon.

The DKC-136 Chief pocket knife is a bit bigger than the others we have looked at so far. When folded, it measures 4.5 inches, and it's 8 inches when open. The knife weighs 7.3 ounces and has a 3-inch blade.

This knife's handle has a unique design, so you don't have to worry about mixing it up with someone else's. The blade uses over 250 layers of steel, and the knife comes with a sheath. Like the other Damascus pocket knives, this one is handmade.

You can buy the DKC-136 Chief for $90 to $110. Amazon customers give the knife an average rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars.

The DKC-45 Golden Ram is perfect if you want a slightly larger folding pocket knife. This knife measures 6 inches when folded and a whopping 11 inches when the blade is out. It has a brass handle with a unique engraving, and the whole thing weighs about 16 ounces.

The knife blade has over 300 layers of steel which makes it great for almost any use. This knife is handmade, and it comes with a protective sheath.

The DKC-45 Golden Ram is a bit on the expensive side with a price tag of $140 to $150. However, the average Damascus pocket knife review is 4.7 out of 5 stars on Amazon.

Customer reviews

We shared the average customer ratings for the different knives that we looked at, but those numbers don't tell the whole story. In addition to knowing the ratings, you should know what a Damascus pocket knife review actually sounds like.

Each of the knives has their own reviews, but the comments are still relevant even if you don't want that specific knife.

Many customers say they love their knife. Some have received compliments, and others love how the knife looks and feels. The knife blade is sharp, and each one is a work of art.

It was hard to find anything negative, but there were some things. One customer said the inlay on the handle of the DKC-136 fell out and the blade goes in crooked. Another customer complained that the knife was too heavy.

Keep in mind that all of the knives we looked at are handmade so that each one will be unique. One knife might have a problem while the next one is perfect. Luckily, you can take advantage of Damascus' guarantee policy to get a refund or exchange.

Pricing

While we can't cover the pricing of every knife in our Damascus pocket knife review, there are a few things you should know.

Damascus makes and sells a variety of knives, and they all have somewhat different prices. The models we looked at cost $40 to $150. Overall, Damascus pocket knives cost anywhere from $25 to $325.

It all depends on the materials, size, and blade thickness.

How to Choose a Pocket Knife

camp-longer-icon

When finding products for this Damascus pocket knife review, we kept some things in mind. For both the Damascus knives and their competitors, we wanted to find knives that use Damascus blades. That way, we could compare the knives themselves instead of the blades.

However, there's more to knives than their blade. Blade size and thickness also matter. If you want a really small pocket knife, you'll want a smaller blade.

On the other hand, you might want a slightly larger pocket knife. If that's the case, then you can choose a knife with a longer blade.

The next thing you want to look at is the handle. It won't matter how sharp or high-quality the blade is if the knife is uncomfortable.

Next, we looked at the price of the knives. You shouldn't have to spend tons of money on a decent pocket knife. As you start your search for the perfect knife, know that you don't have to break the bank for one.

However, price doesn't matter if the quality isn't there. This Damascus pocket knife review only includes the good stuff so you can comparison shop with ease.

How It Compares

camp-longer-icon

Damascus dominates the knife blade market, but for our Damascus pocket knife review, we found a few knives from competitors. All of these knives use Damascus blades, but other companies make the knives.

While these knives all have similar blades, the handle and overall structure aren't going to be the same as each other. However, we think they're worth looking at because even though Damascus makes great blades, they do have some fierce competition for full knives.

The Sharpest Tool

camp-longer-icon

For our Damascus pocket knife review, we chose a few knives from Damascus to focus on. Each of them is affordable, durable, and handmade. They all have great average ratings, and you can buy them online.

When it came to finding competing products, we used similar criteria in our search. We looked for knives that used a Damascus blade. But we also wanted knives that had good customer ratings, were available to buy online, and were affordable and durable.

The KATSU Handmade Pocket Folding Knife has a Damascus steel blade and a steel handle. Even though the handle is steel, it has a unique design that's similar to what you would find on a wood or bamboo handle. The handle also uses Damascus steel.

This knife has a Japanese style thumb notch that allows you to open the knife with one hand. The blade is super sharp, and the knife is on par with its more expensive competition.

KATSU's knife measures 4.5 inches when closed and 7.5 inches when open. The blade is 3 inches long and 3.5 millimeters thick.

Along with the knife, you get a leather sheath and a sack.

The KATSU Handmade Pocket Folding knife costs $70 to $90. Amazon customers give it an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars.

The KUBEY Pocket Knife is small but mighty. This knife is only 4.4 inches long, and that includes the handle and the blade. The handle is 2.6 inches, and the blade is 1.9 inches.

KUBEY's pocket knife uses a Damascus steel blade that is three millimeters thick. The wooden handle is comfortable to hold and use. You can use a lanyard with the knife to hang around your neck or the outside of a bag.

The small knife has a safety lock, but it's still easy to access the blade. Its size and features make it an excellent choice for camping.

You can choose from a variety of blade types from smooth to engraved, and all of them look unique.

The KUBEY Pocket Knife costs $20 to $40, depending on the style you choose. The average customer rating is 4.7 out of 5 stars on Amazon.

The HGDK-002 Mini Pocket Knife from ALBATROSS is another small yet might tool. It uses a Damascus steel blade, and it folds up for safe storage.

Thanks to the Damascus steel, the blade is very sharp and can cut through a lot of materials. A lanyard and lanyard hole make the knife easy to carry and find when in storage. The sandalwood handle gives you a comfortable grip, and it's an excellent choice for camping.

This knife is about 4.75 inches when open and 2.75 inches when closed. The two-inch blade is about three millimeters thick. Along with the knife, you also get a gift box for gift giving or storage.

This folding pocket knife costs $30 to $50. On Amazon, the average customer rating is 4.4 out of 5 stars.

The ALBATROSS HGDK-004 Pocket Knife is a bit more traditional than the HGDK-002. It has a slimmer, longer blade, and the knife itself is longer.

This knife does use Damascus steel for the blade, and it includes over 60 layers of steel. The rosewood handle is comfortable and sleek so that you can use the knife throughout a camping trip.

When not in use, you can lock the blade to keep it, and yourself, safe. The blade is sharp, so when you use the knife, so be very careful. Like the other ALBATROSS knife, you can hang this one on a lanyard for easy access on the go.

You can buy this pocket knife for $30 to $50. The average customer rating is 4.8 out of 5 stars on Amazon.

Our Damascus Pocket Knife Review

camp-longer-icon

We didn't think any single company could dominate the world of pocket knives. But Damascus is sure trying to do just that.

You can find knives with Damascus steel blades from tons of different knife companies, but Damascus also makes full knives. If you want the quality of Damascus blades, why choose a different company to build the knife?

Well, we looked at some competitors to see if we could answer that question. KATSU, KUBEY, and ALBATROSS all make great pocket knives, but they rely on Damascus for their steel blades.

Those companies don't make the entire knife which means they don't have the same quality control as Damascus. Since Damascus makes both blades and knives, they have complete control over the manufacturing process.

Also, they make all of their knives by hand. That makes each Damascus knife unique, and their guarantee policy means you'll get a good product.

While Damascus knives might be a bit more expensive than the competition, that extra cost is worth the quality and the final product you receive. Finally, there are Damascus knives at just about every price point. We looked at four different knives, and they all costs under $150. Some of them were even cheaper than that.

No matter what pocket knife you choose, you need one with a sharp blade, a comfortable handle, and an affordable price. Make your next camping trip easier by selecting a knife from our Damascus pocket knife review. You won't be disappointed.

Which pocket knife will you take on your next camping trip? Tell us all about it in the comments!

Should You Always Use Hiking Boots On A Hike?

The truth is, you don't necessarily need hiking boots on the trail. Depending on the type of trail and the time you intend to spend on it, you can afford the luxury of swapping your boots for comfortable running shoes. They're lighter and get the job done. In some instances, you can actually hike barefoot according to the Society For Barefoot Living. That may not be for everyone, but many report that barefoot hiking has its advantages.

However, when you're hiking in unfavorable weather such as rain, mud, or rocky terrain, without a doubt quality hiking boots are non-negotiable. Here's why. First, they have great traction. Also, most have a high cuff which protects your ankles from rolling. Finally, hiking boots keep your feet dry in wet conditions. As a result, you have the best chance of finishing an expedition with your health intact.

In addition to consumer-grade hiking boots, Under Armour produces a line of highly rated tactical boots that allow you maximum comfort when tackling the outdoors. Could one of these boots be your new hikers for 2019?

[amazon box=”B073WLHBZP”]

These boots have a leather and synthetic material upper finish. The shaft measures approximately halfway up the length of the calf. The nubuck upper helps increase waterproofing and keeps feet dry in wet and muddy conditions. A pig-leather lining increases interior comfort.

It has an eVent waterproof exterior. This finish helps prevent water from penetrating the external surface of the boot, keeping wearers comfortable and dry. The boot has a neutral foot positioning. Additionally, the arch helps keep feet upright and securely in place to prevent ankle injuries while hiking. They're great for on and off-trail hikes, with a thick lug traction outsole.

[amazon box=”B00C1WVU36″]

These boots have a Vibram outsole, with a one-inch arch in the heel. They have Numentum technology and padding around the ankles and tongue. The arc measures 5.75 inches from the shaft, helping keep feet in line and straight while hiking. This design helps prevent turning ankles or injuries off-trail.

The waterproof exterior keeps feet dry in all weather conditions and trail types. A pull-on loop on the back of the boot makes it easier to put them on as well. The mid-cut design helps increase stability and traction, and it protects the ankles from injuries.

One reviewer notes they're okay for casual hikes or smooth, even terrain. However, she notes that for challenging hikes and off-trail hikes, she doesn't rely on these boots.

[amazon box=”B010X0QWVM”]

The mid-height hiking shoe has a leather and synthetic upper finish. A synthetic sole and the 3.9-inch shaft positions feet perfectly in the hiking boot. This height helps minimize movement of the heel to protect the ankle from injuries. The eVent bootie is waterproof and helps keep feet dry.

The waterproof leather features a hydrophobic mesh design. This texture is breathable, light, and keeps feet dry in all weather conditions. The Vibram Duragrip outsole is excellent for off-trail hikes, with excellent traction below the feet. Directional lugs help hikers remain upright and prevent slips on muddy terrain.

In one review, the customer indicates the quality is superior, and the boots are very comfortable. The only drawback is they aren't going to last very long. This hiker claims her boots began to give out on her after only one year of ownership.

Men's Ahnu hiking boots

With several great Ahnu hiking boots for men, it's important to differentiate the types of hiking trails you'll trek. These are some of the best Ahnu hiking boots available for men.

[amazon box=”B01FALZHCE”]

With an EVA midsole feet feel comfortable and hikers have an even landing place for their feet. A shock plate helps minimize the impact on feet when hiking on some surfaces.

In this review, the customer indicates the shoes aren't comfortable. They're too stiff and narrow for their feet.

[amazon box=”B01F9DGZ42″]

This hiking boot is 100 percent leather, with a shaft measuring 5.5 inches from the arch. They're lightweight and have built-in insulation to keep feet warm in the cold. An EVA midsole makes the stepping base comfortable on hikers also.

A balanced and centered design evenly distributes weight. The tongue has padding, as does the area around the ankles. So, the boots feel comfortable, no matter what demanding hiking challenges wearers encounter.

[amazon box=”B072QGZ2C5″]

These hiking shoes are lightweight and contain an EVA midsole with shock absorption properties. The low ankle design makes them easy to mobilize in for a quick, short hiking trail.

They're waterproof with a custom lacing system and have a gripping rubber outsole. The hikers have a NeutralPositioning System (NPS) and deep-lug outsole to keep feet in place at all times.

In this review, the customer notes a ridge on the shoe is uncomfortable. And, the poor arch support also causes discomfort when hiking with these Ahnu hiking shoes.

Step in the Competitors: The Best Hiking Boots from Competitors

Of course, it's important to know what competitors have to offer as well. When comparing Ahnu hiking boots against other top brands, these are a couple of great options to select.

[amazon box=”B01MZAVQO”]

This hiking boot has Keen-Dry technologies. It's a proprietary waterproof membrane keeping hikers dry and letting vapor out to keep feet dry. The metatomical footbed conforms to wearer's feet. They provide excellent arch support and allow hikers to move while cradling the foot's natural contour.

A leather mud shield on the boots ensures dryness and comfort. Mesh paneling also helps increase breathability. The boots have Cleansport NXT™ to shield odors, and multi-directional lugs keep hikers upright.

One reviewer notes after about 30 miles of hiking, the soles began to break apart. They indicate that the boots aren't as durable as other Keen boots.

[amazon box=”B07KKLLQBD”]

This boot has M Select™ DRY to seal water out and keep wearers dry. A suede upper with mesh paneling also helps create a more breathable and comfortable boot.

A closed-seal foam tongue helps keep debris out of the boots. The Merrell M Select™ FIT.ECO+ blended EVA midsole also conforms to wearer's feet. A 5-millimeter lug tread and Vibram® TC5+ sole create a sturdy base for hiking off-trail.

This reviewer notes the boots are excellent and comfortable. However, they don't allow moisture to escape.

Ahnu is a premier brand for men and women alike who are looking for new hiking boots. The brand recognition, however, doesn't automatically mean its the best boot for you.

Women who want a pair of Ahnu hiking boots will love the Ahnu Sugarpine boots. They're waterproof, and have a high-top finish to protect ankles from rolling and injuries. The Vibram heel has a one-inch arch to help decrease over-exertion of weight on the heels. They also have the Numentum technology, creating an efficient, stable stride on off-trail or wet-trail hikes. The padding on the tongue and around the ankles also increases wearability and comfort. A Vibram outsole and waterproof exterior create a durable exterior finish for the boots.

For men, the top Ahnu hiking boots are the Ahnu® Orion. They're waterproof with a leather upper finish. They also have 200 grams insulation to help increase warmth in cold temperatures. The breathable technology, internal EVA midsole, and padding around the tongue help increase wearability/comfort. These boots are light for their size as well. So, they don't slow hikers down off the trail.

Old Timer Pocket Knife Review: A Must-Have Hunting Companion?

Old Timer pocket knife placed at the wooden floor

Schrade-Walden introduced the Old Timer pocket knife model 2OT, in 1959. Those early Old Timer knives were a long time coming and backed by half a century of knifemaking knowhow. With that kind of background, you have to wonder if you should bring their knife along on your next camping adventure.

Walden Knife Company and the Schrade Cutlery Company partnered up in 1904. Some forty years later the associates officially became Schrade-Walden Cutlery Corporation, a division of Imperial Knife. By 1958, the new owners, cousins Henry and Albert Baer, were at the top of their game. They wanted to create a line of pocket knives that harkened back to days of old, so the name Old Timer made sense. And they made the sentiment apparent in their slogan, "Knives like grandad's." Back then, an Old Timer pocket knife was handmade for superior blade placement and inspected for craftsmanship and durability.

Schrade-Walden and Beyond

Schrade-Walden's commitment to quality is what made them leaders in their industry for a hundred years. Time marches on, however. In 2004, Taylor Brands LLC bought out Schrade-Walden. Then, they moved production to China where manufacturing is less costly. Taylor continues to use the original designs and patterns to manufacture new Old Timer knife models. And they also incorporate the traditional packaging to stay true to the originals. But only time will tell if the quality is everlasting.

knife

Types of blades and how you use them

Old Timer pocket knife blades are high carbon steel, a metal known to hold a sharp edge. Be aware that the blade will get a dark patina over time; that's the nature of the steel. And it will rust, so it's vital to keep the knife dry. These days you may run across an Old Timer pocket knife made out of stainless steel, but high carbon is still the steel of choice for the most part.

Blades come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and uses. A pen blade has a straight spine that curves down to form the tip. This sleek, lightweight knife is for woodworking and tasks that require precision, though it's not a super-sharp blade. The clip point is, as its name suggests, “clipped.” The spine is concave at the business end and angles up to a fine needlepoint tip. It's versatile and ideal for piercing, cutting, or slicing.

Spey blades are for castrating livestock. They have a short, flat, straight edge that curves upward and straight back to the tip. The sheepfoot got its name because of their original use, which was to trim a sheep's hooves. They have a flat edge and a blade with no point. They're used for whittling and for cutting through things without worrying about getting stabbed. The Wharncliffe blade is similar to a sheepsfoot. However, it is thicker, and it has a slight curve that starts close to the handle.

Handles

knife handle

The handle of your pocket knife should not only be nice to look at, but it also needs to be comfortable to hold and durable enough to last through years of use. Plus, it's important that it doesn't get slippery when it's wet. Otherwise, it becomes a hazard. A traditional Old Timer pocket knife has a handle that's saw-cut to give it texture, as well as a better grip.

locked

Locking mechanisms

The classic "nail nick" is the most common way to open a pocket knife. It works as you would suspect. You'll find a nick cut into the top of the blade. You use your fingernail to pull it open.

Liner locks are a common mechanism on folding knives. They typically have a side spring bar located along the “lining” inside of the handle. The spring bar is closed tight under tension. When the knife opens, the tension slips the bar inward to the butt of the blade and holds it in place so it can't close accidentally. You push the spring bar in to clear the butt of the blade and close the knife.

A lock back mechanism works by locking the blade's spine into place with a notch on the back of the blade. You push down on the middle or back end of the handle to disengage the lock, which allows you to flip the blade open and closed.

[amazon box=”B000UW0JLI”]

The Gunstock is an iconic folding knife, with a three-inch clip blade. However, it doesn't have the spey blade as is typical of a trapper, or jackknife. It does have the well-known saw-cut handle, characteristic of an Old Timer pocket knife, with nickel and silver bolsters. The handle measures just a little less than four inches long. The knife measures seven inches when fully opened.

Old Timer's classic clip point knife hit the market in 1979. The Cave Bear has a lock back mechanism with a high carbon steel blade that's just shy of four inches long. This Old timer pocket knife has a Delrin handle that's close to five inches long, with the vintage saw cut pattern. It has nickel silver bolsters and brass pins that secure the blade, as well as heat-treated back springs for easy opening and closing. The Cave Bear is almost nine inches at full length.

Customers mostly like the Cave bear 70T, with 59 percent out of 270 reviews rating the Old Timer pocket knife at five stars.

The Minuteman has a pen blade and a two-inch clip point blade. Both blades have a nail nick and heat-treated back springs. Nickel silver bolsters and brass pins stabilize the handle. The overall length is close to five inches.

The Model 80T Senior Old Timer pocket knife boasts a three-inch clip point, a sheepsfoot, and spey blade, making it a versatile pocket knife for everyday use.

  • Reviews
  • Pros and cons

According to buyers, the Model 80T Senior's blades are stainless steel. That could be a pro or a con depending on how you look at it and what you expect. Unlike high carbon steel, stainless doesn't rust, so that's a plus. However, it also doesn't hold a sharp edge as long, which is a drawback for some people. Overall though, customers agree that the knife is well-made and sharp enough to do the job.

[amazon box=”B002EPS5HE”]

The Old Timer Workmate has a high carbon steel, clip point blade, a sheepsfoot, the Wharncliffe blade, and a pen blade, all with nail nicks. Its overall length is just about five and a half inches.

  • Reviews
  • Pros and cons

The Workmate is versatile and easy to sharpen. It's a decent knife for the money. On the flip side, customers complain that the blades aren't as sharp as they used to be, and the quality decreased since moving the production overseas.

How We Reviewed

pocket knives

First, we looked into the history of Old Timer pocket knives and discovered that, until 2004, they were American-made. Then, Taylor bought the rights to the company and moved production to China. So we checked to see if the quality has suffered by looking into reviews to find out what customers think.

Next, we determined who makes pocket knives that are comparable and checked to see how their knives stand up against today's Old Timer pocket knife.

Who Offers a Knife That Compares to an Old Timer?

Nowadays there are a plethora of companies offering high-quality pocket knives. Some have been around for decades, while others are newer entities.

The knives we've added to our comparisons are similar to the traditional pocket knives that an Old Timer pocket knife emulates.

[amazon box=”B000EI0VXY”]

The Buck Solo is comparable to the Old Timer Gunstock Trapper 194OT, with a clip blade that measures close to three inches, and a woodgrain handle with nickel silver bolsters. Much like Old Timer, Buck manufactures this knife in China.

  • Reviews

Customers love buck knives, as they are a well-known company that has a reputation for quality and dependability.

[amazon box=”B00004WA4T”]

Here's a clip point knife that compares to Old Timer's Cave Bear 70T, except for its stainless steel blade which is less likely to rust. The Gerber Gator's textured plastic handle provides excellent grip. It won't slip out of your hands, even if it's wet. It comes with a lock back mechanism that's durable and secure. This one is American-made if that matters to you.

  • Reviews

This little beauty grabbed the highest reviews of any we have mentioned. They love everything about this knife, from the sharpness of the blade to the lock-back mechanism.

[amazon box=”B001ETZ2KE”]

A two-bladed trapper knife is the quintessential pocket knife. The Case Trapper boasts the traditional set-up. It has two blades of equal length -- a clip and spey. A jigged bone handle provides a good grip. Surgical steel blades mean there's no rust. This little jewel is great for everything from opening boxes to cutting rope or fishing line. People also use it as a hunting knife to clean small game.

  • Reviews

The Case Trapper wins as far as customers are concerned. They appreciate everything about this pocket knife, especially its comfort, quality, and price.

Do Old Timer Knives Pocket the Win?

It appears that though Old Timer manufactures their pocket knives in China, they're working to maintain their reputation. Overall, an Old Timer pocket knife is reliable and well-made. However, the quality has waned. So you may find that there are better choices within the same price range. Ultimately, it depends on what your needs are.
